Centuria South, the new Sports & Health Science Facility, is a new four storey, 4,200m2 building for new teaching accommodation for the Universities Dental School, and School of Health and Sports Therapy School delivered under a two stage Design & Build route with a total construction cost of £14.9m.
A key partner in the scheme was the local Strategic Health Authority which meant the project included two working dental surgeries for both University staff and students and the general public. The NHS North East Strategic Health Authority contributed funding of £1.3m to the new dental facility. The dental suite has 20 dental chairs and practice 'phantom heads'. It will help to address the skills shortage in dental services in the region.
The sports therapy facilities are second to none - a series of laboratories and bio-mechanic and hydrotherapy facilities, plus general teaching rooms.
Students with an interest in sports therapy and rehabilitation techniques can carry out cutting edge, evidence based research using the underwater treadmills and video analysis features of the hydrotherapy pool. Sports staff are also excited about the advances in spinal mobilisation therapies enabled by the 3D treatment table.
